A Little About Long Tail Keywords
Some words and phrases are easier to rank for than others. This is due to the amount of competition trying to get those coveted top spots on page one of Google. If you try to rank your site for a word like “camera”, you are going to have one heck of a time doing it. Millions of people search Google for that single word, and all of the big dogs in online sales have spent a fortune getting themselves ranked for that word. The fact that Google has a major crush on big brands now doesn’t help matters either. Have you noticed that the top of the listings are almost always ads anymore? But I digress.
Anyway, in general, the more words you add to the keyword phrase, the easier it becomes to rank. ”Canon Powershot camera” would be easier to rank than just “camera”. If you keep on following this logic, something like “Canon PowerShot SD1300 IS Review” would be even easier. These long tail phrases don’t get nearly as much traffic as the “head” keyword, camera, but they are MUCH easier to rank for, and the idea is that being able to rank multiple long tails quickly will result in big numbers in the long run.
Finding the long tails that people actually type into Google has always been a bit of a guessing game, but Google does tip their hand a bit. The Google Adwords tool is pretty unreliable, but when you start typing things into the Google search box, you will find that Google tries to guess what you are looking for. It offers up suggestions based on what other people have asked about previously. I’ve often thought that being able to grab up those suggested terms could be very profitable, but doing it manually would be an unbelievable time sink and a pain in the neck to say the least.
