The first step in learning the clarinet is to either buy or rent the instrument. There are many beginner level instruments available that are great to practice on. A plastic clarinet is a popular choice to begin learning on. Many music stores offer beginner level classes for those that are just starting out on the clarinet. In these classes, they teach how to put the clarinet together, how to take care of the clarinet and the basic skills that go along with playing this instrument.

Once you have mastered the basics of putting the clarinet together and have the reed attached to the mouthpiece, you can begin practicing on the instrument. The reed-side of the mouthpiece should be placed downwards, touching your lower lip. The top teeth should be firmly planted on the top of the mouthpiece on the side that is opposite the reed. The mouth should be sealed around the mouthpiece when blowing, and the cheeks should not poof out.
