Culture and Festivals in Murcia

Murcia is a city in Spain. It is part of the province of the same name. There is so much to do with in this small province and so many places to see such as the capital city, and other cities like Mazarron and Cartagena. Dancing, theatre, food, as well as music player a great part of the culture of this part of the world. There are extensive cultural programs that are presented at the Congress centre and the Auditorium in the city. The Romea Theatre has a few cultural programs for visitors and tourists. There are a few festivals, namely the Jazz festival, the Festival of Three Cultures and the Mediterranean galleries. The Festival of Murcia is in the summer. There are very many examples of contemporary art as well as traditional art in the city’s numerous galleries and art centers.

The calendar of this city has very many festivals which are symbolized by different activities and events. Easter or the Holy week has been declared a major tourist attraction because of the procession of the ‘los Coloraos’ (the red ones). This is done in the evening of Holy Wednesday and the morning of Good Friday. The procession is done with all the beautiful sculptures done by Salzillo. On Easter Sunday, the spring festival begins. The city is then flooded by the beautiful color of the Huerta. At the Proclamation of la Huerta known as the Bando de la Huerta, everyone has to be attired in the regional costumes. At the end of Lent, there is a huge celebration where there is a great parade of fireworks. They also have thousands of free toys which surround the burning of the sardine as a purification ritual. In September is when the locals celebrate la Feria (the Fair).

The second Tuesday of September, they take the statue of the Virgin of la Fuensanta up to the Sanctuary that is named after her. There are very many shows and performances at these celebrations. Murcia City also celebrates Christmas by having exhibitions of the craftsmanship. There are other events like ‘Cuadrillas’ and ‘Auroros’ where people sing popular Murcian carols.
