Some people claim that life is best lived aboard a boat. They claim that there’s no bigger satisfaction than enjoying your free time sailing about rather than driving , working all the time or watching TV. For this very reason, buying a boat is a great idea even if it doesn’t necessarily make the most financial sense.
Of course, some claim that buying a house is the most sensible way of going about things and investing your money. Buying a boat is not a financial investment. However, it can be considered an investment in life. If it will make you happy, and help fulfill a life longs dream, who says it’s not an investment? Life is to be enjoyed and if you spend every waking minute basking in the fear of Rich Dad you might end up never doing some truly satisfying things.
Owning a boat can cost quite a bit of money in upkeep. But, if you choose the right one and don’t go over your head in something you can’t afford just to impress your friends, the rewards are much bigger than the expenses. New experiences with family, testing your skills and learning new ones – these are some of the exciting things you can encounter if you just let go a little bit and consider a boat. The key is, of course, not going in over your head – buy something affordable and do your research. The fact of the matter is, most of the time, small boats can be much more enjoyable than large ones. The large ones are more expensive, cost more in maintenance, pay more rent at marinas and more importantly, take much more time to maintain.
Do your research right, find out what is it you and your family needs, and then narrow your search to at least 3-5 models -Then go from there. If it’s a used one make sure to test-drive (sail) it. You want to check for mechanical soundness, but more importantly, that it works for you. While it might be a hassle to take the entire family out to the test sail, it’s quite worth it. You want to make sure the boat fits your family well. Most of the time, the seller will have no problem. He or she knows that if they are able to convince the rest of your family that the boat is great, you are pretty much already sold as well!
